Power to the scanners

APEX MIT Bargaining 2026

APEX is currently in negotiations with Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand for a new collective agreement for medical imaging technologists, MIT students and radiology clinical assistants.

Our focus is on ensuring our collective agreement provisions are modernised in a way which strengthens the MIT workforce.

Over the last year, since the release of Broken Scanners, APEX and Te Whatu Ora have been working together closely to improve support for MITs, but our view is that in order to continue the forward progress, a complete overhaul of the collective agreement is required, with specific attention paid to increasing the incentives for weekend and night shift work.

We have prepared a comprehensive set of specific claims to improve the working conditions for MITs which is underpinned by our view that in order to meet accelerating demand for medical imaging APEX and the Te Whatu Ora must work together to expand:

  1. The availability of 7-day a week radiology services including increased weekend capacity for non-acute work.
  2. On duty capacity including through greater use of night shifts, evening shifts and weekend shifts in place of on-call work, where appropriate.
  3. Radiology services in rural and community hospitals and being able to utilise the network of scanners across the Health New Zealand system in a more flexible way.

Bargaining updates are sent out regularly by email newsletter and available through your local delegate.
