Emma Daly,
Specimen Services Technician

Where do you work and what do you do?

I work at Pathlab Waikato, and I am a specimen services technician.

What does a good day at work look like for you?

A good day is when I learn something new, and because I learn something new every day, that makes me happy. I also enjoy working with my colleagues. We get along well, we’re social and we have great communication between us all.

You’ve been a Delegate through two rounds of collective bargaining. How have you found it?

Both frustrating and interesting in hearing the perspectives of the employer as an employee. I enjoy doing something different outside of my normal 9:00 – 5:00 and it can be rewarding when we come to a good agreement, or I can see that some people are benefitting well who may not have benefited before. I’m very much for the people; I have no problem being the voice for those who feel like they aren’t being heard.

“I have no problem being the voice for those who feel like they aren’t being heard.”

What do you enjoy about being an APEX Delegate?

I enjoy the collective conversations and bargaining, getting to know other departments and how they operate. I also enjoy meeting more of my colleagues that I wouldn’t usually brush into every day. I enjoy being part of the future.

What do you think APEX should focus on for AST professions in the future?

For us, solidifying pay parity is forefront. Keeping the momentum and strength going, whether it’s over all of Allied or individual bargaining, maintaining good clauses for members and just keep doing what we’re doing.

What do you like to do when you are not at work?

When I get home, I like to cross stitch and hang out with my kids. I am currently 25% through completing a 140,000 stitch project which is keeping me busy for the next two years.
